On Friday the 20th of October, TryHackMe headed out to Lithuania to sponsor a three-day CTF event run by the National Cyber Security Centre and Lithuanian Riflemen’s Union!
As the largest Baltic cyber defense and security innovation hackathon, the Ugninis Skyas event saw hundreds of attendees testing their strengths, with prizes available for the three winners collecting the most red flags.
What is Ugninis Skydas?
Ugninis Skydas, translating to ‘The Flaming Shield’, is a hackathon event organised by Šaulių Sąjunga, the Lithuanian Riflemen's Union (LRU), in cooperation with ScaleWolf (an international investment fund investing in companies developing innovations in the field of defense and security), and Tech-Park Kaunas.
The cyber defence and security innovation hackathon, Ugninis Skydas 2023, combines two activities: the development of technologies for land, sea and air security in a classical hackathon, and the online game CTF ("Capture The Flag"), to strengthen and test cyber security skills.
Over 50 of the most talented IT specialists and programmers attended as mentors at the Ugninis Skydas 2023 hackathon, joined by world-class military experts and security institute SANS, who delivered lectures throughout the event.
When speaking of the event, Lieutenant Colonel Linas Idzelis, Commander of the Lithuanian Riflemen's Union, also shared his plans to organise more cyber defence and security innovation hackathons in the future, with requests from participants to attend again next year!
How TryHackMe got involved!
In support of the CTF event, TryHackMe provided virtual machines, created custom labs, and even provided CTF winners with prizes, on top of the €15,000, €10,000, and €5,000 cash prizes provided by ScaleWolf!
Jordan Pelling, Enterprise Customer Success Manager at TryHackMe (pictured above), attended in support of the CTF event.
TryHackMe would also like to say a very special thank you to all organisers and volunteers who put their hearts into making this biggest cyber defense and security innovation event in the Baltic States!
Congratulations to the winners!
During the three-day hackathon, teams spent countless hours generating ideas, crafting, prototyping, developing the products, and consulting with top mentors. The ideas of the hackathon teams were evaluated by partners of the investment fund ‘ScaleWolf’. On the last day, they decided to double the prizes and, instead of the planned prize fund of 30,000 euros for three teams, they distributed 60,000 euros to six teams!

TryHackMe would like to say a huge congratulations to V-TECH (pictured above) for finishing first in the 24-hour CTF event, and Stirling & BROSWARM for winning the hackathon!
Other team winners included Astrolight & JGR in second place, and Pinciukai & Aktivus Photonics in third place. Teams awarded for best solo players were Aggressive Pacifists in second place, and LŠS & RISB in third place. We’d also like to give a very special shoutout to Tautis Levinskas, who collected the most flags!
